sponge

she called me a sponge
she didn't mean me no harm
no one ever does but
it doesn't mean we don't get hurt
i promised her that one day
we'd buy an ant farm and
she handed me a gift bag
labelled "happy times"

behind closed doors (working title)

she wanted
just a little space
where his heart wouldn't beat so bitter
cross her cold face
promise
a sleeve and an ace
now the air hung about her like a dark cherry cloud like a
black veil
just for a second i could have sworn she whispered "take me away"

she drives home every night
her sweet soul suicide
cos she don't wanna be alone
she burns like candlelight
her smoke screen by design
cos she don't wanna be alone

she wanted
a drink to kiss the pain
but the warm velvet spread/swell of the liquor's kicking cold again
takes just a minute to recall the health that she gave away

you're not the only one

you're not the one i'm thinking of
you know i don't believe in love
so sue me if that's not enough
you're not the only one

i spilled it from the very start
i painted you a broken heart
and said we'd only fall apart
you're not the only one

i'm waking up
to some old song
the kind that always turned me on
you're not the one
you're not the only one
i'm waking up
and one by one
i'm fixing up what you've undone
you're not the one
you're not the only one

you're taking me all out to sea
and washing me in memories
but i don't wanna stay that clean
you're not the only one

i laid it out to you before
i swear i laid it at your door
you stuck it to my very core
you're not the only one

========

mouth full of blood
from doing things i never should
you're not the one
not the one
no more

thoughts from the passenger seat

wind washes through my hair from the open car window and brings with it an overwhelming rush of cleanliness, even the petrol-stained air smells like dark cherry mocha.
meanwhile a plastic pouch burns a hole through the leather of my jacket as i muse over the time i looked after myself and did things for the good of my health.
